Every month the North End Winnipeg Blog will be featuring a business/service or person living, working or making a difference in our community as a thank you for making this place a wonderful place to live, work and play. If you know of someone or a business/service that should be recognized, please contact us at the email located on the left side bar on why they should be nominated. Have you ever loved something so much that you wanted to see it change for the better? Enter North Ender, activist and all around good guy, Michael Redhead Champagne. Born in Shamattawa Cree Nation and adopted by two loving parents, Michael was raised in the North End and is proud to be from such an amazing community. It is our honour to have Michael as the first recipient for the North End Spotlight feature.
Frustrated with the increasing negativity surrounding his beloved North End and the challenges facing our youth on a daily basis, Michael set out to make a change for the better. AYO! Aboriginal Youth Opportunities, established in 2010, aims to find creative ways to increase Aboriginal Youth access to meaningful Opportunities. In 2011 AYO created The FWD a North End youth newspaper promoting community involvement of our youth in their community allowing their voices to be heard when so many people are quick to shoot them down.
Growing violence in the North End prompted Michael to start a series of meetings/marches in late 2011 to promote our community and show the rest of the city that the North End is a wonderful place to live, work and play. Meet Me @ the Bell Tower meets every Friday evening at 6 p.m. in front of the Selkirk Bell Tower with messages of love, acceptance and tolerance along with messages of peace and hope. I had the opportunity to attend the Bell Tower BBQ earlier this year and the love coming from my community moved me. The North End is a lovely place and Michael’s long-term vision for a vibrant North End is inspiring.
Michael’s job is not done and he continues to promote the good message of our community and our people. Michael’s life story is also amazing and is far from being finished. His heart is big and still has a lot of love to give. That is why Michael “MC” Redhead Champagne is the first recipient of the North End Spotlight. We are proud to call this leader our friend.
